Arab League foreign ministers adjourned Sunday without agreeing on PLO demands to impose sanctions on the United States for allegedly supporting the Israeli invasion of Lebanon.

Saturday’s meeting was delayed by the late arrival of Syrian Foreign Minister Abdul Alim Khaddam, who reportedly stopped in Moscow before flying to Tunis.

Only eight foreign ministers from the 22-nation Arab League attended the 2-day conference called to adopt a unified Arab stance at the urgent request of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

They also failed to set a date for an emergency summit of League heads of state to discuss the latest developments.

Syrian Foreign Minister Abdul Alim Khaddam, who arrived late at the meeting after making a stop in Moscow to discuss the Lebanese situation with Soviet officials, called on the League to ‘take clear and meaningful decision for all the world to see’ and agree on a date for an emergency summit of League heads of state.

He applauded the U.N. Security Council resolution sponsored by France calling for a disengagement of all forces around Beirut. The resolution was vetoed by the United States Saturday.
