The wife of former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam, Najat Marqabi,

Najat Marqabi married Abdul Halim Khaddam in 1954. She is the mother of their four children: Jamal, Jihad, Bassem, and Reem.

Her husband advanced through various positions, becoming governor of Hama, then Quneitra, and later governor of the suburbs of Damascus. Hafez al-Assad appointed him Minister of Foreign Affairs in his first cabinet after the coup of November 16, 1970, known as the “Corrective Movement.” He remained in this position until 1984, when he was appointed Vice President of the Republic.

He paved the way for Bashar al-Assad to inherit the presidency after his father’s death, serving as interim president. He retained the position of Vice President until he finally defected from the regime at the end of 2005.

Najat Marqabi passed away in Paris on April 12, 2020, less than two weeks after her husband died of a heart attack. She was buried in the Islamic cemetery in Paris.
