Jacques Chirac, the President of France, received Abdel Halim Khaddam, the Vice President of Syria, and Farouq El-Shara, the Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, who arrived in Paris as part of Syria’s efforts to counter Israeli maneuvers regarding Security Council resolution 425, with the intention of nullifying its content. The two sides engaged in discussions concerning the Israeli proposal. Khaddam expressed that both France and Syria share the view that resolution 425 entails an unconditional Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon without any accompanying conditions or obligations. Khaddam emphasized that he did not perceive French policy to be convinced of the sincerity of the Israeli proposal.

He further added that the position is unequivocal, with Syria affirming that if the Israeli government genuinely desires peace, it must adhere to the established principles and frameworks. However, the contrary is true as Israel persistently obstructs the path to peace. The actions of the Israeli government towards the Palestinians, despite numerous agreements with them, serve to confirm the Israeli maneuvers.
