Damascus reaffirmed its stance on the Lebanese situation. Syrian Vice President, Mr. Abd al-Halim Khaddam, stated that Syria cannot be defeated in Lebanon and that no one can impose a defeat on Syria in that country. He emphasized that the relationship between Syrians and Lebanese is stronger than the relationship between residents of the U.S. states of California and New York.

Khaddam reiterated in an interview with the Saudi newspaper “Al-Sharq Al-Awsat” that it was the Lebanese government that invited Syria to come to Lebanon in 1976 and the need to maintain the security of both Lebanon and Syria that led to Syria’s presence in Lebanon. He noted that the Lebanese National Pact, which is unwritten, dating back to 1943, prohibits the use of Lebanese territory to attack Syria. He also confirmed that Israeli and Syrian forces clashed during the Israeli invasion in 1982, and that the Israelis reached a distance of 25 kilometers from Damascus.
