Former Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam called on the international community to form an international military coalition to intervene in Syria, stating that it is the only solution to save the region from the danger of the Syrian regime, which is militarily supported by Iran and Hezbollah and politically supported by Russia.
Khaddam, in a statement to the Kuwaiti newspaper “Al-Siyasah,” considered the Syrian crisis as complex and incapable of being resolved through political means, emphasizing that no matter how much international support the revolution receives, nothing will change on the ground without military intervention.
He asserted that the Assad regime does not operate unilaterally but within the context of Iranian and Russian decisions. He pointed out that the Palestinian experience succeeded in gaining international support, but at the same time, Israel expanded its settlement operations. Therefore, he believes that “the Syrian crisis will have no solution other than the formation of an international military coalition, or else tens of thousands of Syrians will resort to despair, and chaos will begin to spread to the countries of the region.”
Khaddam also stated that “the Iranian leadership has long launched its sectarian agenda in Arab and Islamic countries through its roles in Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, and also through its dormant cells in the Gulf states. Therefore, military support for the Syrian revolution is necessary to halt the Iranian expansion in the Arab East.”
He added that Russia supports Iran because it sees in it an ally that could establish a foothold in the Gulf. He called on Arab officials and planners of Arab policies to “expedite the formation of this military alliance; otherwise, the fires of wars will spread to Arab regions.”
