President Carter said at his news conference today that he would meet President Assad in Geneva after he attended a seven‐nation economic summit meeting in London next month.
After his news conference, Mr. Carter met with the Syrian Foreign Minister, Abdel Halim Khaddam, in the Oval Office of the White House.
A White House statement said the President had underlined the importance he attributed to Syrian participation in Middle East peace diplomacy.
The President and the Foreign Minister discussed the continued improvement in United States‐Syrian relations, which were re‐established in 1974,seven years after Syria broke them off during the 1967 Middle East War, the statement said.
