Official sources say two Syrian envoys are to visit Spain to complete a European tour to rally support for Syria’s position at the collapsing Middle East peace process.
The sources say Vice-President Abdel Halim Khaddam and Foreign Minister Farouk Sharaa were scheduled to meet Spanish officials in Madrid on Tuesday for talks on the dangers of the present Israeli policies on the Arab-Israeli peace process. They told United Press International that Khaddam and Sharaa will explain the need for the European Union to play an effective role in bringing Israel back to the negotiating table and resuming the peace talks with Syria from where they stopped in February 1996, and in line with the land-for-peace principle adopted at the 1991 Madrid conference.
The sources say Syria was completely aware that the U.S. administration was not doing enough to reactivate the peace talks on the Syrian and Lebanese tracks and ease the tension resulting from the Israeli housing projects in east Jerusalem.
Their visit to Spain came after the Arab League and the Jerusalem Committee, a sub-committee of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, called on Arab and Muslim countries to freeze relations with Israel and close representative offices.
