Former Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam downplayed the importance of holding a Friends of Syria conference, emphasizing that any conference that does not decide to form an international military alliance to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad’s regime is of no benefit.
Khaddam stated in an exclusive statement to “Sawa Radio,” “Such conferences are symbolic, and they will not produce anything that leads to responding to the Syrian people’s demands for freedom and democracy.”
He expressed his belief that any conference that does not start from the basis of using military force to deter the Bashar regime and save the Syrian people will have no significance.
Khaddam believed that the Syrian people are not just resisting the Syrian regime but are also resisting an alliance comprising Iran, Iraq, and Russia. He expressed his astonishment at the statements made by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who objected to military intervention in Syria, saying that Maliki and his party govern Iraq after the fall of the regime of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein under the American umbrella and by American decision.
