Khaddam stated, “The law signed by US President George Bush in December, authorizing the imposition of sanctions on Syria, has no impact on Syria.”
Abdel Halim Khaddam, the Syrian Vice President, asserted today, Sunday, that if the United States continues to impose sanctions on Damascus, it will only harm its own interests.
Speaking to reporters in Damascus, Khaddam emphasized that the law signed by the US President in December does not have any effect on Syria, and he further emphasized that no one has the power to punish Syria.
Khaddam also added that while the United States can take measures, these actions will ultimately be detrimental to the interests of those who implement them.
Sources within the US Congress have recently indicated that Bush is on the verge of implementing the law imposing sanctions on Syria, which may include restrictions on investments by American energy companies in Syria and the prohibition of Syrian aircraft from entering US airspace.
