Former Syrian Vice President Abdelhalim Khaddam stated that the killing of Colonel Wissam al-Hassan, the head of the Information Branch in the Internal Security Forces, was a premeditated decision by Bashar al-Assad’s regime.

Khaddam, speaking from Paris in an exclusive statement to Al Arabiya News Channel, explained that Bashar al-Assad’s elimination of Colonel Wissam al-Hassan was carried out to cover up the crimes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon. Additionally, it aimed to instill fear among the Lebanese circles, compelling them to immediately abandon support for the opposition in Syria.

Khaddam mentioned that the explosives used in al-Hassan’s assassination were transported to Lebanese territory with the knowledge and supervision of Michel Samaha, the political advisor to the Syrian presidency. He pointed out that the crime of al-Hassan’s assassination is connected to the political situation in Lebanon since the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

He added that Bashar al-Assad’s regime targeted “al-Hassan” because he was one of the prominent security officials who managed to expose the crimes of the Syrian regime in Lebanon, and for this reason, he was eliminated.
