Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam, in an interview with the French newspaper Le Figaro, disclosed that the regime led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been supplying weapons to cities and villages inhabited by his Alawite supporters.
He highlighted that the regime initiated the transfer of heavy weaponry from the Syrian army to Sahel areas, particularly towards Latakia, around a month ago. Khaddam explained that this move was intended to sustain the repression of demonstrators in various cities.
Khaddam further revealed that the Assad regime has altered its strategy and is now focused on instigating a sectarian conflict in Syria. He emphasized that Assad expressed his desire to establish an Alawite state to aid him in managing such a sectarian war during a conversation with one of his followers in Lebanon.
The former Syrian vice president added that Assad intends to establish his own republic in Latakia, utilizing underground shelters as a base of operations.
Khaddam underlined that “Assad does not seek to flee. Having rejected all opportunities presented by Arab countries, he is left with no choice but to destabilize Syria.”
