Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam expressed concern about the future of Lebanon as long as the Damascus regime remains in power. He stressed that the Lebanese people have the right to be worried due to the Syrian regime’s actions. Khaddam told the Italian news agency Aki in an interview that Bashar Al-Assad’s mistakes led to his defeat in Lebanon. Assad disrupted the Taif Agreement and dealt with Lebanese politics through the security services, without understanding the deep feelings of the Lebanese people. Khaddam believes that Assad’s defeat will lead him to undermine the situation in Lebanon and return it to Rustam Ghazaleh, his former intelligence chief in Lebanon. Regarding Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri’s initiative to solve the constitutional crisis in Lebanon, Khaddam said it was positive, but any proposal needs dialogue, and there is no initiative that can be characterized as definitive. If the initiative results in an agreement after dialogue, it will be a historic step in Lebanese politics.
