The Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam held talks in Tehran with Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani regarding bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, Rafsanjani received Khaddam in Tehran the day before yesterday, where Khaddam delivered a message from President Assad concerning bilateral relations and topics of mutual interest.

Khaddam will represent Assad at the inauguration of the Asia railway network project. He told journalists at the airport that he would discuss with Rafsanjani and his deputy, Hassan Habibi, issues of mutual concern, particularly the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon, as well as anything that could strengthen the relations between the two countries.

The day before yesterday, Khaddam also met with Habibi to discuss “bilateral relations, the regional situation, and other topics of common interest.” Khaddam emphasized to his Iranian counterpart Syria’s commitment to its distinguished and excellent relations with Iran, and President Assad’s personal interest in this matter.

Iranian sources mentioned that Khaddam and Habibi’s talks covered bilateral relations, ways to enhance them, the latest developments in the peace process and Israeli-Syrian negotiations, the recent Israeli aggression against Lebanon, and the “April understanding.”

Khaddam reaffirmed Syria’s commitment to its legitimate rights and its refusal to compromise on its principles, holding Israel responsible for the “impasse” in the negotiations and their suspension.

On the other hand, the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq stated that Khaddam met the day before yesterday in Tehran with the Council’s President Ayatollah Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, where they “discussed the situation in Iraq and the upcoming Iraqi opposition meeting to be held soon in Syria.”
