Syria warned the United Nations Israel might attack to destroy Syria’s long-range Soviet-made missiles and declared it might bring the issue before the U.N. Security Council.
State-run Damascus radio Wednesday accused the United States and Israel of preparing for an offensive by spreading word that Syria’s SAM-5s, an anti-aircraft missile with a range of almost 200 miles, could cover all of Lebanon and most of northern Israel.
Syrian Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam dispatched a note Wednesday to U.N. Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar warning that Israel may attack Syria to destroy its air defense system missiles.
Syrian Foreign Minister Abdul Khaddam said in to the Security Council that Israeli threats of agression not only jeopardize security in the region, ‘they even directly endanger peace and security.’
‘If Israel persists in its threats of aggression, the government of the Syrian Arab Republic reserves the right to refer this question to the Security Council,’ Khaddam said in the letter.
The official Damascus radio said the protest was included in a message accusing the United States and Israel of preparing an offensive by spreading reports that Syria was deploying sophisticated SAM-5 rockets.
‘Such statements implicate an aggression against Syrian air defense installations inside Syrian territory,’ Khaddam reportedly told Perez de Cuellar.
