Secretary of State Kissinger and Foreign Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam met today unexpectedly for a second day of talks on the Middle East situation.
They conferred for about 90 mihutes over breakfast at the State Department. The original schedule called only for Friday meetings with Mr. Kissinger and President Ford.
Today’s meeting was found necessary after the original talks showed a need for clarification of Syria’s position on several issues, a State Department official said.
It appeared after the breakfast meeting that Mr. Kissinger was not entirely satisfied with Mr. Khaddam’s position. Mr. Kissinger refused to characterize the talks as having made any progress.
“The Foreign Minister and concluded a very detailed review of the Middle East situation and the prospects in the area,” Mr. Kissinger said.
