Damascus — KUNA — Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam stated yesterday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s call for a regional conference for Middle East settlement is completely inconsistent with the Arab Peace Initiative launched by Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, which was adopted by the Beirut Arab Summit, as well as with international legitimacy resolutions.

This was said during a meeting yesterday in Damascus between Khaddam and a leading delegation from the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, headed by its Secretary-General Nayef Hawatmeh.

A statement issued by the Front after the meeting indicated that Khaddam pointed out that Sharon’s conditions aim to liquidate the Intifada and resistance, and to advance his political plan of reverting to long-term partial solutions. In this regard, Khaddam reaffirmed Syria’s support for Palestinian resistance and the elimination of settlements and occupation.

The statement also noted that Hawatmeh emphasized that Sharon’s aggression has torn apart any political and legal immunity for Palestinian cities, villages, and camps.

On the other hand, various Syrian provinces witnessed intensive meetings of Intifada support committees yesterday, aimed at revitalizing their work to organize fundraising campaigns and auctions. The total amount contributed by the committees to the Palestinian people so far has exceeded 8 million dollars.
