Syria, the only Arab member in the Security Council, tops the list of opponents to the American-British project.
Syrian Vice President Abdel-Halim Khaddam stated yesterday, Tuesday, that Syria will vote against a second resolution regarding Iraq in the Security Council.
Khaddam told Reuters on the sidelines of the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Malaysia: “There is no justification for proposing any project. The inspectors are doing their job in implementing Resolution 1441.” He added, saying, “Therefore, we do not agree to this project.” When asked if Syria will vote against the resolution proposed by the United States and Britain, he said: “It is natural.”
In Kuala Lumpur, leaders of non-aligned countries announced their support for Iraq, criticizing the dominance and aggression of the United States, and defending the credibility of the United Nations. The movement’s opinion is important because five of its other members, namely Angola, Guinea, Chile, Pakistan, and Cameroon, are also members of the Security Council. Seven opposing votes could cancel the resolution.
