The dissident Syrian Vice President, Abdel Halim Khaddam, described Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as reluctant, violent, and deficient because the presidency was intended for his brother Basil, not for him.

He expressed his conviction that the Alawites will eventually stop supporting Assad, as the Syrian revolution is not and will not be sectarian in nature.

In an interview with CNN, he stated that ministers support Assad, considering that some of them are employees and others are afraid. “It will kill them,” he added.

When asked by media outlet Rima Maktabi, he clarified, “I have no political ambitions at all. I simply want to see a free Syria.”

He emphasized that Assad himself is the one who governs Syria and gives orders for all the killings.

He expressed hope for the international community to intervene militarily in order to put an end to the destruction and killings in Syria.

He advised Assad to step down from power before the people force him out, anticipating that Bashar al-Assad will meet the same fate as Muammar Gaddafi.

Khaddam firmly asserted that there is no civil war in Syria.
