Sheikh Pierre Gemayel condemned the assassination attempt on Minister Abdel Halim Khaddam and stated yesterday: Recent incidents in some Arab capitals are clear indicators of a plan aimed at undermining the Arab economy as a prelude to destabilizing certain regimes.

In his statement, the Phalange Party leader said that the Syrian Foreign Minister made significant and commendable efforts during the Lebanese crisis to bring peace to Lebanon. It is regrettable and condemnable that such a dedicated man would be subjected to such an attempt.

He added that this attempt is yet another indication among many of the determination of foreign hands and minds to disrupt regimes and stability, not only in Lebanon but also in other Arab countries.

After previously shifting the battleground in Lebanon from one area to another, those behind these schemes have been trying for some time to spread destruction from one country to another. The incidents in Cairo and Alexandria, the Samiramis Hotel in Damascus, the Jordan Hotel in Amman, and prior acts of sabotage in Kuwait and elsewhere are clear signs of an intent to undermine the economy, regimes, and stability of this region.

Gemayel concluded by saying: Time may reveal that those behind these plans are working on behalf of those who are hostile to Arab causes in general and the Palestinian cause in particular.
