Lebanese Foreign Minister Philip Takla arrived in Damascus on Thursday (30 January) for talks with his Syrian counterpart, Mr. Abdel-Halim Khaddam, on co-ordinating their approach at a Arab Joint Defence Council meeting in Cairo next week.

The Council is holding the session next Wednesday (5 February) at Lebanon’s request following Israeli attacks on South Lebanon early last month (January).

Mr. Takla told newsmen, after a two-hour closed meeting, that the talks were successful and agreement was comprehensive. He said they discussed questions related to the meeting of the Council and reviewed the general situation in the area, particularly in Lebanon.

Mr. Khaddam who also spoke to newsmen, said the talks had further strengthened the close relations of the two countries. And that the current situation brought about closer co-operation, co-ordination and joint action.

He said more meetings between the two countries would be held in future.
