There’s been a further call from President Carter for a Middle East peace conference to resume in Geneva. Mr Carter had talks at the White House on Wednesday (28 September with Syria’s Foreign Minister, Abdel-Halim Khaddam, who spoke in Arabic through a translator, replied that Syria was ready for another meeting, an assured the President:”You won’t have any problem fro us. The problem is not from our side.”
SYNOPSIS: The talks between President Carter and Mr Khaddam lasted for two hours….and afterwards a White House spokesman said they’d been useful and carried the dialogue forward. And Mr Khaddam said Syria hoped the Geneva conference would resume this year….and Syria would attend, but only if the conference would provide a serious result.

One point was stressed at the White House by Mr Khaddam: Syria’s assertion of the need to establish a Palestinian state …. a view the White House seems reluctant to endorse.
