The Syrian Vice President, Abdul Halim Khaddam, met today with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak as part of a short visit to Egypt for consultation and coordination between the two countries, especially regarding the latest developments in the region.

The meeting was attended by the Egyptian Prime Minister, Dr. Atef Ebeid, the Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher, and the Syrian Ambassador to Cairo, Youssef Al-Maqdah.

Yesterday, Presidents Mubarak and Assad exchanged views on the overall efforts and communications made by the parties involved in the Middle East peace process during a phone call.

The visit of the Syrian Vice President to Cairo comes just days before President Mubarak’s upcoming visit to the United States next Wednesday, focusing on discussions about the Middle East peace issue and evaluating the situation on the Palestinian-Israeli track. Cairo witnessed intensive political activities today, starting with the arrival of a delegation from the Israeli Policy Forum led by the Forum’s President, Marvin Lender, followed by the arrival of the Syrian Vice President, and later the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, George Tenet.
