Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam left Damascus today heading to Tehran, carrying a letter from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Khatami.

Iranian diplomatic sources said that Assad’s letter to Khatami revolves around coordination and consultation between the two countries regarding developments in the region, especially the situation in Palestinian territories in light of Israeli escalation. They added that Khaddam’s discussions with Iranian leadership will focus on regional issues of mutual concern, as well as bilateral relations and ways to develop them in various fields.

The sources emphasized that Khaddam’s visit to Tehran, which will last for two days, is of great significance, especially given the tense situation in the region and Israeli military attacks on Syrian and Lebanese interests. It comes as part of the coordination between the two countries to find suitable solutions to address any emergencies or the outbreak of a new war in the region.

The sources also indicated that Khaddam will meet with the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ali Khamenei, and the Iranian Vice President, Hassan Habibi, during the visit.
