The Syrian Vice-President Abdel-Halim Khaddam has held a meeting in Lebanon with the country’s leaders in an attempt to heal growing rifts within the Lebanese government.
Relations between the Prime Minister, Rafiq Hariri and the President, Emile Lahoud, have deteriorated since last week when Mr Hariri and the Speaker of Parliament, Nabih Berri, indirectly accused Mr Lahoud of giving Lebanese intelligence agents too much power.
Mr Khaddam’s visit also comes amid growing Lebanese opposition to Syria’s role as powerbroker in the country.
His visit was marred on Sunday when he collapsed while making a speech in the city of Tripoli.
He spent the night in hospital, but doctors now say he’s fully recovered
