Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam conferred here today with the American Assistant Secretary of State, Richard W. Murphy, the Syrian press agency reported.

”There has been an exchange of views on Lebanese affairs, and in particular the issue of the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon,” the agency said.

United States Embassy officials declined to comment.

Diplomatic sources said Mr. Murphy would leave Damascus on Monday morning without seeing President Hafez al-Assad. Mr. Murphy will visit Israel before going to Beirut on Tuesday to meet with President Amin Gemayel of Lebanon, the sources said.

After the meeting today, Mr. Khaddam flew to Algeria to meet with Mr. Gemayel. There was no official explanation of the visit.
