The Syrian Deputy Prime minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. A.H. Khaddam, arrived in India on Monday (10 November) to hold talks with the Indian government.

Mr.Khaddam had meetings with the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi and other top government officials including the India Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr.Y.B.Chavan.

During the past year India has had talks with several delegations from Middle East countries including the Saudi Arabian Petroleum Minister, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani over India’s need for an assured supply of petroleum.

Official talks between India and Syrian opened in New Delhi, so after Mr. Abdul Halim Khaddam, Deputy Prime Minister of Syria and his delegation called on India’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Mr. Y.B.Chavan. Mr. Khaddam is on a visit to India till 14th of November having arrived there on 10th. The meeting between the delegations of the two countries was held in the room of India’s Foreign Affairs Minister in the Central Secretariat complex of New Delhi. Mr. Chavan introduced Mr. Khaddam to the member of the delegation from India which included Mr. Kewal Singh, the Foreign Secretary. Later during their stay the members of the Syrian delegation are scheduled all on the Prime Minister of India Mrs. Gandhi.

The large Central Secretariat building complex in Delhi, India, was the site for talks between the Syrian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. A.H. Khaddam, and top Indian government officials. There to greet the Syrian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Y.B. Chavan. Mr. Khaddam also held talks with the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

It is not known what topics were discussed in the talks between Mr. Khaddam and Mr. Chavan. The Syrian delegation led by Mr. Khaddam is in India on a four day state visit. This is not the first occasion in recent times that India has entertained ministerial delegations from Mid Eastern countries.

During the past year the Indian government has held talks with several representatives from Middle East countries, including the Saudi Arabian Petroleum Minister, Sheikh Ahmed Zaki Yamani.
