Yesterday evening, Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam criticized the ongoing war in Afghanistan, which has been going on for more than five weeks. He believed that the conflict has escalated into a “world war” that is beyond anyone’s control, as the enemy remains unidentified. During a comprehensive political presentation to Arab media professionals, Khaddam stated that all countries are currently facing a grave situation, dealing with a world war that has commenced without a clear understanding of how, when, and where it will end.
Khaddam explained that the current outcomes of the war were not surprising, considering that it involves the most powerful country in the world against the poorest nation, already exhausted by internal conflicts. He expressed his conviction that achieving stability and peace in Afghanistan would be challenging due to the dominance of ethnic and tribal factors, which dictate the course of events. Furthermore, regional and international conflicts are expected to arise, involving Pakistan, Russia, and Iran.
The Syrian Vice President condemned the terrorist attacks that occurred in the United States on September 11, emphasizing the tragic loss of countless innocent lives. He also criticized the implications of Security Council resolution 1373, which calls for global efforts to combat terrorism and imposes unprecedented emergency laws. Khaddam believed that such measures limit the sovereignty of nations and subject them to the oversight of the Security Council.
