The Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Abdellatif Filali, departed from Damascus yesterday after a three-day visit, during which he delivered a letter from King Hassan II of Morocco to Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad.

Filali, who is the first Moroccan official to visit Syria since the restoration of relations between the two countries in January, characterized his discussions in Damascus as “positive and candid.” He expressed his optimism regarding the outcomes of the visit, which marks the beginning of a new phase in bilateral relations.

In July 1986, Damascus severed its ties with Morocco following a visit to Efran by the then Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres.

Filali further stated that his conversations in Damascus with President Assad and Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam covered “bilateral relations, matters of mutual interest, and the Arab issue.”
