Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, the Syrian Vice President, welcomed Egypt’s return to the League of Arab States yesterday. In an interview with the “Asharq Al-Awsat” newspaper published in Arabic in London, he pointed out that Egypt has confirmed its commitment to Arab causes on several occasions. He also clarified that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is not directly responsible for the peace agreement with Israel.

Mr. Khaddam’s statements came after Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad announced last Saturday that Syria would not object to President Mubarak’s participation in the Arab Summit Conference.

In a positive response to the Syrian statements, President Mubarak announced in Cairo yesterday that Egypt now has good relations with Syria, and there are no differences between the two countries. Mubarak also thanked President Assad for the statement he made last Saturday.

In Damascus, the Syrian news agency “SANA” reported that King Hussein of Jordan had a phone call with the Syrian president yesterday. They discussed the current Arab situation and issues of common concern.
