Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam emphasized the need for a “clear and unified Arab position that contributes to launching a serious Arab initiative to avoid the possibilities of war, which is in its final stages of preparation.” During his meeting with Lebanese Minister of State Bishara Merhej and General Coordinator of the Gathering of Associations and Popular Committees, Maan Bashour, Khaddam called for “thorough consideration of formulas and initiatives capable of saving the nation and preserving its rights.”

Khaddam stated: “The seriousness of the surrounding conditions in the entire region requires more communication, meeting, and solidarity within the country and at the level of the nation. All Lebanese, with their various currents and groups, are called to rise to the challenge in order to protect their country and future and to contribute to conveying the true picture of Arab rights and suffering to the whole world.”

Merhej and Bashour returned to Beirut yesterday. According to a statement they distributed, they discussed with Khaddam the rapid developments on both the regional and international levels.
