Former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam expressed his “surprise at Annan’s continuation in his mission after he failed in it and declared this failure,” in a message addressed to the Arab and international envoy Kofi Annan. Khaddam considered that “Annan went to Damascus not to help the Syrian people but to help Syrian President Bashar al-Assad,” questioning, “How do you dare to dialogue with Assad, who daily kills large numbers of Syrians, destroys their homes and livelihoods, and whose tanks and military units move from place to place targeting the entire Syrian population? And you announce after meeting him that you have agreed with him on a new plan that you will present to the armed resistance?”

He added, “Our revolutionaries have decided, along with the Syrian people, that there will be no political or non-political dialogue with Assad,” noting that “the armed resistance is present within Syrian territory and not outside it.” He further added that “Annan attacks sister Arab governments that have declared their sympathy with the Syrian people while he implements the instructions of Russia and Iran.”
