Yesterday afternoon, a meeting was held at the home of Mr. Zuhair Mohsen in Beirut, attended by the Deputy Prime Minister and Syrian Foreign Minister Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, General Hikmat al-Shihabi, Mr. Yasser Arafat, and Mr. Kamal Jumblatt.

After the meeting, Mr. Jumblatt made the following statement: “We are still discussing the current situation of this phase. Last night was calm, and there was discipline from both sides. We hope it will remain that way, in line with the hopes of everyone, except for a small minority, so that we can cross the bridge from a temporary truce to internal peace, and shift the limited military battle around Beirut to a political battle so that it can take on its real dimensions and clarity.”

He added, “The political battle revolves entirely around the issue of amending and developing the political system, and the solution will only come through the reform of the political system.”
