Official sources have indicated that the French Minister held a meeting with Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam, discussing the situation in the region, developments in the peace process, and relations with the European Union.

The head of French diplomacy, who concluded his tour yesterday evening, expressed his government’s desire and aspiration for a broader and more effective role in the peace process. However, he emphasized the importance of Lebanon’s sovereignty and independence, noting that his country is keen on recognizing the unity and sovereignty of Lebanon. In this context, he pointed out a significant convergence of views between Damascus and Paris regarding Beirut.

For his part, Khaddam welcomed an active role for France in the peace process. He noted that Syria has always desired France to play an active role that helps advance the process towards its goal.
