Former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam said, “The Syrian people will achieve change without external intervention.” During a press conference held on Thursday evening in Brussels, Khaddam added that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will step down, and the Syrian people will triumph, achieve their goals, and breathe freedom.

Former Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam stated, “After the success of the revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt, the youth in Syria launched their revolution, led by them, and not affiliated with any party or political group.”

He continued, “The Syrian regime responded to peaceful protests and calls for building a civil state by killing hundreds in various cities, especially in Hauran, Latakia, Homs, Damascus, and its suburbs.”

Khaddam added, “The essence of the matter is changing the regime, establishing a new constitution, and building a parliamentary democracy.” In response to a question about Turkish and some Arab countries’ support for reforms in Syria, Khaddam said, “Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan requested that Bashar al-Assad implement radical reforms.”

He added, “Turkey, as a neighboring country of Syria, cannot call for a regime change. It supports reform in Syria and is keen not to harm the Syrian people.”

Khaddam emphasized that the situation is different for Arab countries. The Libyan opposition was supported against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi, while Bashar al-Assad, an ally of Gaddafi, contributed to striking the Libyan opposition by sending aircraft and technical assistance.”

Khaddam warned that there is sectarian tension in Syria sowed by the regime. He noted that the Alawite sect did not engage in sedition and said, “I am not concerned about this matter.”
