Khaddam to Lecture on Current Arab Political Situation Tomorrow at Qatar University

His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Crown Prince, will be welcoming his brother, Mr. Abdul Halim Khaddam, Vice President of the Syrian Arab Republic, upon his arrival in Doha this morning (Sunday) for a two-day visit to the country.

During the visit, His Highness the Crown Prince and the Syrian Vice President will hold discussions on strengthening bilateral cooperation and the developments in the region. According to information from Al Raya, Mr. Khaddam will go directly to the Amiri Diwan to meet with His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Emir of Qatar, who will convey a message from his brother, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria.

In a statement to Al Raya, His Excellency Mr. Haajem Ibrahim, the Syrian Ambassador in Doha, highlighted that the main goal of Mr. Khaddam’s visit is to strengthen and enhance bilateral relations between Doha and Damascus, which have been firmly established through reciprocal visits between His Highness the Emir and President Bashar al-Assad. These visits have become one of the most significant aspects of the development in these relations.

Ambassador Haajem explained that the central Arab issue, namely the Palestinian issue, will be at the forefront of the Syrian Vice President’s discussions in Doha. He pointed out that Mr. Khaddam will present to the Qatari leadership Damascus’s perspective on the possibility of resuming negotiations with the Israeli side in accordance with national and pan-Arab principles, especially since Damascus’s positions on this matter have the support and backing of the Qatari leadership. He affirmed that Syria has adopted peace as a strategic option for 12 years and continues to affirm its desire to achieve it, although the opposing party, represented by the Israeli government, constantly imposes obstacles and impediments.

Additionally, Mr. Khaddam will deliver a lecture on the Arab political situation from all its aspects at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, Monday, in the Ibn Khaldun Hall at Qatar University.
