In a recent televised interview, former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam stated that a coup against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is not feasible in the current circumstances due to the sectarian makeup of the armed forces. Khaddam emphasized that the conflict is no longer a struggle between a tyrannical ruler and an oppressed people, but rather regional and international factors have become involved. Regarding the upcoming Friends of Syria conference in Doha, Khaddam expressed his belief that the Syrian people are tired of conferences that make decisions without taking effective action. He further noted that the opposition is divided, lacking a unified position or opinion, and that external parties providing assistance to certain opposition groups have negatively impacted the opposition’s coherence, particularly within Syria.
