Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam affirmed that “the tyrant Bashar al-Assad has violated all religious and national prohibitions by using the armed forces to commit crimes of murder, genocide, destruction, and displacement. Thus, the army has transformed from a force to protect the nation and liberate the land into an army that attacks the people and violates the security and rights of citizens.”

In statements on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, Khaddam said: “It was surprising that some politicians called on the regime to stop the crimes of murder during the holy month of Ramadan, knowing the nature of the murderous regime and the aggressive nature of its president. It is also surprising that some declare their readiness for dialogue with the murderous regime without realizing that such a stance could legitimize killing, tyranny, and destruction.”

He believed that such positions to please this or that party outside of Syria constitute a negative phenomenon that affects the future of the country. Despite the difficult circumstances and the international community’s neglect of its responsibilities to protect oppressed peoples and enable them to determine their destiny, as is happening with the bloody aggression against the Syrian people, you have endured in the face of aggression and recorded in Syria’s history your heroism and sacrifices. It will become part of this history as you have affirmed that Syria will remain, as it has always been, a foundation for freedom, dignity, and justice. You have also affirmed that the Syrian people will remain one of the nations clinging to their rights, including the right to self-determination.

He emphasized that “history will judge the Syrian revolution as one of the most important revolutions in its resilience and sacrifices known to the peoples in its history.”
