President Jacques Chirac received a message from Syrian President Hafez al-Assad regarding the stalled peace process in the Middle East and the bilateral relations between the two countries.
The message was delivered by Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam during a meeting between President Chirac, Khaddam, and Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa in Paris yesterday.
Khaddam once again condemned the policy of “the alliances” in the Middle East, referring to the Israeli-Turkish maneuvers in the eastern Mediterranean with the participation of the United States.
He stated that “France and Europe can play an important role in promoting the peace process and countering Israel’s obstinacy, which seeks to establish alliances in the region that cause concern to everyone
.” The Syrian Vice President made this statement before leaving Paris to return to Damascus after meeting with French Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. At the end of his talks in Paris with French officials, Khaddam described the Turkish-Israeli relations and maneuvers as “dangerous” to regional stability. This issue was the focus of discussions between Khaddam, al-Sharaa, and French Foreign Minister Hubert Védrine.
