An approach to change

For his part, Abdul Halim Khaddam said that the aim of the meeting was to discuss the situation in Syria and search for an approach to changing the regime there. He added in a statement to Al Jazeera that the participants in the meeting were opponents outside Syria, without anyone from inside participating in order to protect them For his part,
Al-Bayanouni denied that there was any interference by any party in the Brussels meeting, which aims to consult on finding mechanisms to bring about change in Syria, stressing that the meeting is limited to Syrians only.
Khaddam met last month in Brussels with the General Controller of the Syrian Muslim Brotherhood, which is banned in Syria, and the two men decided to contact the Syrian opposition parties in order to intensify pressure on the ruling regime in Damascus.

Khaddam, who has been living in exile in Paris since his resignation from his duties in power and the ruling Arab Socialist Baath Party last June, has been waging a media campaign to overthrow the Syrian regime.
