Abdel Halim Khaddam, the former Vice President of Syria, has once again called on the Arab and international community to form a military coalition to rescue the Syrians from the current regime, especially since the “Geneva 2” conference has yielded nothing. He pointed out that the Syrian people are still being killed daily, and no one is defending them.

Khaddam stated in an interview with the Jordanian electronic newspaper “Al-Maqar” on Friday, “Syria has become a refuge for extremists who now pose a threat not only to the regime but to the entire world.” He added that the situation has become complex, and the only solution is to form an international military coalition to rescue the Syrian people.

He continued, “A year ago, there were no external extremists in Syria, as the Syrian regime was the one killing innocent civilians.” He noted that the Assad army is backed by Iran, Hezbollah, Abu Fadl al-Abbas, and their allies, including volunteers from Yemen, Iran, and Afghanistan. In this context, he called on the international community to support the Free Syrian Army with anti-aircraft missiles, medium-range missiles, and advanced weapons capable of confronting the regime.

Khaddam urged the Arab and international community to take responsibility for the terrorist and extremist acts committed by the Assad regime against the Syrian people, stating, “The Syrians are a moderate people, and those who came from abroad to fight them, along with the regime, have destroyed both the people and the state.”

He added, “When I previously called for the formation of a military coalition to intervene in Syria, I faced accusations from the Syrian opposition that I supported the entry of foreign occupiers into the country. However, I emphasized to them that I am not calling for occupation but intervention to rescue the Syrian people. Isn’t Iran part of the regime’s war against them, and doesn’t it play a role in it?”

Regarding Arab humanitarian support, the former Vice President considered that some countries provide significant humanitarian assistance to the Syrians, whose situation has become extremely dire due to the Assad regime’s reliance on starving and subjugating the population. He proposed holding a comprehensive Syrian national conference in which all components of the people participate to work towards overthrowing the regime and forming a unified political and military system, preferably mostly composed of Syrians from within the country.
