Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam emphasized that “the Syrians will not support Bashar al-Assad’s candidacy in the upcoming presidential elections due to the massacres he committed against his own people.” He pointed out that “Assad’s candidacy for these elections is, in itself, a challenge to the international community.”
Khaddam cast doubt, in a statement to the Jordanian newspaper “Al-Maqar,” on the possibility of holding presidential elections in Syria, stating that “most Syrian regions are witnessing intense fighting between the opposition and the regime.” He considered that “Syria will be liberated, even if it takes years.”
He held the international community “responsible for the suffering of the Syrian people,” blaming Russia and Iran “for their continued support for a bloody regime that has killed and displaced millions of Syrians.”
