His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Crown Prince, led the farewell for his brother, Mr. Abdel Halim Khaddam, Vice President of the Syrian Arab Republic, as he and his accompanying delegation departed from Doha International Airport yesterday afternoon after a two-day visit to the country. Also present at the farewell was His Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Prime Minister.

In a lecture addressing the current Arab political situation, Mr. Khaddam considered the suffering of Iraq and its future implications as the most serious challenge Arabs will face in the coming years. He called for a new Arab pact where countries would relinquish their national sovereignty for the benefit of the collective, criticizing the Arab political system for not involving the people in shaping their future and destiny.

In his lecture delivered yesterday at Qatar University, Mr. Khaddam stated that external development implies that the peoples of the region are incapable of developing themselves and securing their own interests.
