Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam criticized, for the first time, the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad
Khaddam added that although he was an important man in the history of Syria, he was weak in front of his family and thought about inheritance, which contradicts the laws and the constitution.
In an interview published by Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper today, Khaddam confirmed that he had received many letters warning him of the possibility of being subjected to an assassination attempt, stressing that the issue of fear did not arise for him because he had previously been exposed to five assassination attempts, but he survived them.
In response to a question about any ambitions he has to lead Syria, Khaddam said that he is working according to a political project, but not to become president of the republic, but rather to save the country.
Khaddam pointed out that there is frustration in Syria, and there is a rift in national unity due to the isolation policy followed by the regime, and that Syria is in danger and this calls for national unity and strengthening the internal front with all forces regardless of intellectual or political differences.
Khaddam considered that the ruling Baath Party, with the mentality that now governs it, cannot keep pace with the times, nor take a single step towards achieving its far-reaching goals, calling for a radical change in thought and approach.
Khaddam added that security is what holds power, and the security services have their interests and their leaders have their own interests, and therefore the role of security weakens as people’s feeling of the ability to confront the mistakes that were committed strengthens.
