A source close to the Egyptian presidency reported that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak received the Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam, who arrived in Cairo yesterday morning for talks on “the latest global and regional developments and the Palestinian issue.

” The source added that Khaddam did not make any statements immediately after the meeting with Mubarak and headed to a meeting with the Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Obeid.

Obeid and the Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher attended the meeting with Mubarak. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had visited Sharm El Sheikh on the Red Sea on September 18th, where he met with his Egyptian counterpart, and they discussed the developments following the September 11 attacks in the United States.

Mubarak and Assad discussed “the results of the messages and communications made by the Egyptian president at the level of leaders in the United States and European countries, in addition to communications and opinion exchange at the Arab level.”
