Former Syrian Vice President Abd al-Halim Khaddam responded to the accusations that were leveled against him for allegedly meeting with Israelis. He reminded everyone of his stance towards the Zionist entity since its inception, emphasizing that “what Israel fears is the establishment of a democratic system in Syria.”

In a statement issued yesterday, he said: “Some newspapers this morning (yesterday) published, citing Israeli newspapers, that my house was filled with clients of American, French, Saudi, and Israeli intelligence, and that my stance is motivated by hatred and revenge.”

The statement added: “This is completely untrue and a complete lie, and it is clear that there are the following reasons behind it:

  • The Israelis are aware of my position on the Zionist project and my resistance to it since the establishment of the state of Israel.
  • The Israelis, in the first place, fear the establishment of a democratic system in Syria because what serves their interests is the presence of weak regimes in the Arab world in front of external powers while being strong over their own people.
  • It is also clear that what was published by Israeli newspapers is what was published by Charle Ayoub in the ‘Al-Diyar’ newspaper, which confirms that the source is the same.”
