Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam said in published remarks Sunday his country would never accept Israel’s terms for withdrawal from the occupied Golan Heights. ‘We will never accept the Israeli terms and conditions,’ he told the English-language newspaper Iran News during his brief visit to Tehran Saturday to deliver a letter from President Hafez Assad to Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani. In the interview carried by the official Islamic Republic News Agency Khaddam said, ‘The Israeli stance on the Golan Heights is vague and Syria won’t accept any precondition for the withdrawal of the Israeli forces from its territory. Syria wants Israel to withdraw its forces from the Golan Heights on the basis of 1967 borders.’ Israel occupied the heights in the 1967 Middle East War and has held onto it since. Israel has proposed a time frame for withdrawing its forces and says it wants to set up early warning posts on the plateau. The issue is a major stumbling block in peace negotiations between Israel and Syria. Khaddam, commenting on the defection of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s senior military aides to Jordan Aug. 8, said ‘no outsiders’ should meddle in Iraq’s internal affairs and Iraq’s territorial integrity must be protected, Iran News said. Officials from Syria, Iran and Turkey plan to meet in the southern Iranian city of Isfahan in September to discuss the situation in Iraq. The three countries, which border Iraq, hold talks twice a year to review developments in Iraq.
