Former Syrian Vice President Abdel Halim Khaddam stated that the assassination of former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin halted the signing of a peace agreement between Syria and Israel. According to the Al-Sanara Arabic newspaper, published in Nazareth on Friday, Khaddam mentioned that Rabin and the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad were on the verge of achieving peace between the two nations, but Rabin’s assassination brought an end to this prospect. Khaddam further added that opposition forces and movements against the regime of Bashar Al-Assad are in the process of announcing the establishment of a national front aimed at saving Syria from the rule of President Bashar Al-Assad, who succeeded his father in 2000. Al-Sanara newspaper announced that it will feature the full interview with Khaddam in its upcoming issue next Friday.
