News reports here today mentioned that Mr. Abdel-Halim Khaddam, the Deputy Prime Minister and Syrian Minister of Foreign Affairs, will arrive in Beirut tomorrow evening to complete his mediation.
Mr. Khaddam visited Beirut for this purpose for the first time on May 15th last year, following the formation of the military government.
He arrived for the second time on June 10th of this year when Rashid Karami faced serious obstacles in his attempt to form a reconciliation government.
The reports state that Abdel-Halim Khaddam will participate, upon his arrival in Lebanese territory, in consultations involving Rashid Karami, Walid Jumblatt, and Rima, as well as Camille Chamoun. The news reports expressed absolute optimism and stated that “Karami will have no choice but to submit the list of his cabinet to President Franjieh next Saturday (tomorrow).”
