Former Syrian Vice President Abdul Haleem Khaddam is currently working on his new book about the current Syrian crisis. Approximately a month ago, Khaddam began collecting information and monitoring international positions related to the crisis, addressing events and statements with in-depth political analysis.

The title of this book is still pending, and it sheds light on the political, social, and economic reasons behind the Syrian revolution. Due to his precise knowledge of the details and intricacies of governance in Syria, the former Vice President reveals the security and political mentality that has governed Syria over the past three decades. However, he focuses more on the period of Bashar al-Assad’s rule.

In his explanation of the difference in governance between father Hafez al-Assad and son Bashar, Khaddam states in this book that the distinction lies in the fact that Hafez used to act as he wished in the country with international coverage, given his good relations with the outside world and some Arab countries. On the other hand, Bashar al-Assad does whatever he wants recklessly, only with the cover of Iran, which he describes as having the primary decision-making power in Syria. Yet, he adds at the same moment that both of them have the ability to burn down Syria entirely.

In his testimony on Bashar al-Assad, Khaddam affirmed that this individual is not free from psychological and nervous crises, and perhaps stupidity, as he observed during his time as vice president. However, he also mentioned at the same time that he is a person who is not devoid of cunning.

The book addresses the Syrian crisis from all its aspects, especially the developments that the revolution has gone through, and the formation of the Syrian opposition, starting from the Syrian National Council established in October 2011 to the Syrian National Coalition. It also covers the phase of the Geneva II conference, highlighting some mistakes of the political and military opposition in leading the revolution. In his new book, Khaddam not only presents an overview but also proposes solutions to the Syrian crisis, emphasizing that he is fully convinced that the situation in Syria will not change unless there is an international military alliance to overthrow Assad. It’s reported that Khaddam will finalize the last chapters of this book in the coming months, drawing on the political memories he initiated about four months ago.

According to exclusive information obtained by “Okaz,” Khaddam was in the process of writing a series of parts discussing the past three decades of Syrian political life. Considering Khaddam held vital positions, ranging from the Minister of Foreign Affairs to the Vice President under both Assad father and son.

In this series, he narrates Syrian relations with Arab countries, Western nations, and the United States. Each Arab country has a separate book, with the first book covering Syrian-Lebanese relations, the second dealing with Syrian-Egyptian relations with the United States, and so on.

This upcoming book and the anticipated series on the political history of Syria constitute the second edition of the Vice President’s books. In an earlier work, he wrote about the “Syrian-Iranian Alliance and the Region,” where he pointed out that the Middle East faces two severe and explosive crises threatening regional and international security and stability. These crises involve the Arab-Israeli conflict and the conflict between the United States and Iran.
