A French judicial source revealed that the former Syrian Vice President, Abdel Halim Khaddam, filed a lawsuit against Rifaat al-Assad, the brother of the late Syrian President Hafez al-Assad, holding him responsible for the massacre committed by the Syrian regime in Hama in 1982.

Khaddam had confirmed in an interview with “Radio Sawa” that he had no involvement in Syria’s internal affairs during the events in Hama. He added, “I was the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and I had no connection at all with all the internal events.”

He further stated, “At that time, Syria was preoccupied with several conflicts: a conflict with the regime in Iraq, the crisis in Lebanon, and the problem with Egypt. So, all my efforts were directed towards foreign policy.”

Khaddam emphasized that they had no power to change the course of events, saying, “Resignation in such circumstances meant that the resigning person would face one of two situations: either death or imprisonment until death.”
